Pain conditions of great interest to elderly patients: a systematic review. Pain conditions are common in later life. Often the management of pain is driven by the underlying disease or the treatment of the disease itself. However, the elderly are likely to need more pain relief than younger populations, and the priorities for pain management may differ as a result of comorbidities and co-existing conditions. Because the elderly are a growing population, pain management strategies should be directed to this patient group. The aim of this article is to synthesise the evidence for and against the recommendations of pain conditions of great interest to the elderly population, when it comes to the treatment of the elderly by the general practitioner. A systematic literature review was undertaken by searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases. Reviews were selected for inclusion if they were systematic reviews or meta-analyses. Article selection was based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria and using a random number generator. Recommendations were extracted and evaluated in detail in the case of randomised controlled trials or controlled clinical trials of high quality. The reference lists of the included articles were then searched for additional studies, and pain conditions of interest were added to the review. Eight randomised controlled trials and two controlled clinical trials of high quality were included in the review. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are an effective treatment for pain conditions including osteoarthritis, and back and neck pain. Patient education has a role in the management of patients with pain conditions. The role of opioids in the treatment of pain has been extensively studied. A Cochrane review of short-term use of opioids (mainly oral opioids) concluded that there was insufficient evidence that opioids are more effective than other types of analgesia for pain, despite providing better 'coping'. Short-term opioid use did not appear 82138339de
